NFL Mock Draft: Will Birds finally pick a LB?

Share

With the 15th, 46th, and 51st picks in the first and second rounds, the Eagles have an opportunity to add some premium talent to an already solid roster. Will Andy Reid draft a linebacker early? Let's take a look with my Annual Super Bowl Mock Draft:

1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
A no-brainer here. With Peyton Manning's 28M payout looming, the Colts look to rebuild behind the best QB prospect since, well, Manning.
2. St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil, OT, USC
The Rams have so many holes they might as well start with a cornerstone left tackle in Kalil. Could be a prime spot to trade down with a team that covets Robert Griffin III (looking at you Washington).

3. Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
An aging and expensive Antoine Winfield drives the Vikes to select this elite, shutdown corner.

4. Cleveland Browns - Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
The dynamic Heisman Trophy winner should be able to help energize a moribund Cleveland offense.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
While not in the same class as an Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald, Blackmon will make an immediate impact on a dreadful Bucs offense.
6. Washington Redskins - Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
Reiff will be a nice bookend at RT for the 'Skins.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars - Quinton Coples, DL, North Carolina
Forget the Julius Peppers comparisons, Coples wasn't nearly as dominant. But he still possesses some intriguing skills that the Jags could really use at defensive end.

8. Miami Dolphins - Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
Luck's blindside protector will slide into RT opposite Jake Long to give whoever QBs for the Fins some time to find Brandon Marshall.

9. Carolina Panthers - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
The Panthers could use an elite pass rusher, but with none available here, a top cover corner may give their existing linemen an extra second to get to the QB.

10. Buffalo Bills - Nick Perry, DEOLB, USC
The Bills got burned by Aaron Maybin, but they still need to address their lack of an outside pass rush. Perry will need to make the conversion from 4-3 end to 3-4 LB.
11. Kansas City Chiefs - Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
Dwayne Bowe is an unrestricted free agent and may be too pricey (and moody), so the Chiefs give either Matt Cassel or Kyle Orton the draft's top deep threat in Wright.

12. Seattle Seahawks - Mike Brockers, DT, LSU
Brockers gives the Seahawks an inside pass rush they've been lacking since the Cortez Kennedy days.

13. Arizona Cardinals - David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
Not a sexy pick (as Eagles fans know all too well), but DeCastro is a terrific player who should help a terrible Cardinals O-line stabilize.

14. Dallas Cowboys - Courtney Upshaw, LB, Alabama
With both Bradie James and Anthony Spencer UFAs, the Cowboys hedge their bets by selecting a player who can excel either inside or out in Dallas' 3-4 system.

15. Philadelphia Eagles - Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
I've been tooting his horn since the start of the college season and will be dismayed if Reid passes on him. Kuechly (6-3, 240) has the size, technique and instincts to be a star, and plays the position the Eagles have been trying to fill with castoffs and late-round picks ever since Jeremiah Trotter limped off the field for the last time.

No more drafting for two years down the road or best player available here. Reid's window to win is about to close and get painted shut if he doesn't address his aversion to drafting (good) LBs early. Kuechly gives the opportunity to right wrongs of drafts past. Here's hoping he makes the right choice. You can watch good breakdown of some of Kuechly's games here.

16. New York Jets - Melvin Ingram, OLB, South Carolina
The Jets hit pay dirt by resurrecting Aaron Maybin's disappointing career, but still need a long-term replacement for the aging Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas. Ingram is a relentless pass rusher who should be able to convert to a 3-4 OLB.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (fOAK) - Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Great value here, as the Bengals are putting together their version of Aikman (Andy Dalton), Smith (Richardson) and Irvin (A.J. Green).

18. San Diego Chargers - Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama
Inside linebacker Takeo Spikes is going to turn 36 next season and Na'il Diggs is a UFA. Hightower is a devastating player against the run, and as he showed in the BCS Championship game, he can be an effective blitzer up the middle.

19. Chicago Bears - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
The Bears are desperate for offensive play-makers, as they can't rely on Devin Hester's punt returns as their sole source of offense. Floyd has had some issues off the field, but should be their No. 1 guy before the 2012 season is over.
20. Tennessee Titans - Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Stalwart CB Courtland Finnegan is a UFA, as are starting safeties Chris Hope and Michael Griffin. Jenkins had a turbulent college career, but seems to have settled down. He is a terrific athlete and potential shutdown corner.

21. Cincinnati Bengals - Mark Barron, S, Alabama
The Bengals' safety play in 2011 was terrible, and starter Reggie Nelson is a UFA this off-season. Barron is the best safety in the draft, and should provide some stability and leadership in the secondary.
22. Cleveland Browns (fATL) - Devon Still, DT, Penn State
While one-hit wonders from PSU tend not to fare well, Still is too talented to pass up here. Cleveland struck gold with DT Phil Taylor last year, and Still should provide a quick, penetrating presence next to him.

23. Detroit Lions - Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Long-time starting LT Jeff Backus is a free agent, and the Lions need to keep their franchise QB Matt Stafford healthy to have any chance of returning to the playoffs. Adams isn't perfect, but he's got the physical tools to be a long-time starter.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers - Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia
What was once a strength in Pittsburgh is now a mess. Starting OG Chris Kemoeatu most likely is going to be cut and there is little to no depth behind him. Glenn is a dominant inside presence who can also slide over to RT if needed.
25. Denver Broncos - Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State
Both of Denver's starting DTs -- Broderick Bunkley and Marcus Thomas -- are free agents. Cox is a big, strong DT who can handle himself against the run and slice through gaps to get up field against the pass.
26. Houston Texans - Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
The Texans' defense made huge strides under Wade Phillips in 2011. Poe gives them a true nose tackle to anchor their 3-4 defensive line. Poe's size (6-5, 350) and quickness should allow Houston's talented inside linebackers Brian Cushing and Demeco Ryans to thrive.
27. New England Patriots (fNO) - Whitney Mercilus, DEOLB, Illinois
Mercilus was a DE at Illinois and blossomed in 2011, leading the nation with 16 sacks. The Pats would move him to OLB in their 3-4 defense where they lack a reliable pass rushing presence.
28. Green Bay Packers - Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall
The Pack struggled to find a complement for Clay Matthews in 2011. Curry played both OLB and DE in college and had 11 sacks in 2011.

29. Baltimore Ravens - Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
Starting center Matt Birk is a free agent and may retire this off-season. Konz is another top lineman from Wisconsin and should be able to step into the starting lineup on Day 1.

30. San Francisco 49ers - Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Alex Smith, a free agent, improved under Jim Harbaugh, but isn't going to get the team over the hump. Doubtful they feel Colin Kaepernick, last season's second-round pick, is a long-term solution either. Tannehill has tremendous upside after only playing QB for two seasons at Texas A&M.

31. New York Giants - Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
Jonathan Goff is a free agent and rookie Greg Jones is undersized. Burfict is huge (6-3, 250) and nasty -- something the Giants' defense could always use more of.

32. New England Patriots - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
While the Pats' lito throw everything but the kitchen sink out on the field to play corner, they need to buckle down and find some true starters. Teams threw away from Dennard in 2010 in favor of targeting Giants' 2011 first-round pick Prince Amukumara.

Second Round

33. St. Louis Rams - Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
34. Indianapolis Colts - Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
35. Minnesota Vikings - Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
36. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina
37. Cleveland Browns - Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford
38. Jacksonville Jaguars - Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
39. Washington Redskins - Brandon Thompson, DL, Clemson
40. Carolina Panthers - Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska
41. Buffalo Bills - Ronnell Lewis, LB, Oklahoma
42. Miami Dolphins - Andre Branch, DEOLB, Clemson
43. Seattle Seahawks - Nick Foles, QB, Arizona
44. Kansas City Chiefs - Zebrie Sanders, OT, Florida State
45. Dallas Cowboys - Brandon Washington, OG, Miami (FL)

46. Philadelphia Eagles - Lamar Miller, RB, Miami (FL)
No, this isn't a huge need for the Eagles, but sometimes value trumps need (unless it's the need for a true middle linebacker). Miller would be an excellent complement to LeSean McCoy and added insurance in case the Eagles decide not to play ball with McCoy come contract time. Miller has good size (5-11, 212) and explosive speed. Not shifty like McCoy, Miller is a one-cut and gone type of back. Again, a bit of stretch here, but the Eagles need to be able to spell McCoy, and bringing in a guy like Miller could be devastating to any defense. Plus, Miller also doubles as a kick returner. Check out his highlights here.

47. New York Jets - Kelechi Osemele, OL, Iowa State
48. New England Patriots (fOAK) - David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech
49. San Diego Chargers - Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson
50. Chicago Bears - Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin
51. Philadelphia Eagles (fARI) - Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah State
Wagner played both inside and out at Utah State and is perfectly capable athletically to play outside in the pros. A solid tackler with a strong frame (6-014, 240), Wagner is good in traffic and is patient. Used as a standup blitzer often at Utah State. The Eagles would be building a young, talented linebacking core with both Kuechly and Wagner. Highlights of Wagner against Auburn this season here.

52. Tennessee Titans - Kendall Reyes, DT, Connecticut
53. Cincinnati Bengals - Leonard Johnson, CB, Iowa State
54. Detroit Lions - Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia
55. Atlanta Falcons - Orson Charles, TE, Georgia
56. Pittsburgh Steelers - Doug Martin, RB, Boise State
57. Denver Broncos - George Iloka, S, Boise State
58. Houston Texans - Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech
59. New Orleans Saints - Shea McClellin, LB, Boise State
60. Green Bay Packers - Bruce Irvin, LB, West Virginia
61. Baltimore Ravens - Rueben Randle, WR, LSU
62. San Francisco 49ers - Dwight Jones, WR, North Carolina
63. New York Giants - Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
64. New England Patriots - Markelle Martin, S, Oklahoma State
