When Jody Shelley left Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J., on Monday, he was pretty angry.

Now we know why.

Shelley sustained a fractured orbital bone under his left eye after being struck by a deflected puck from the stick of Andreas Nodl at practice yesterday.

As CSNPhilly.com reported, Shelley had a nasty gash running from under his eye down the left side of his face alongside his nose.

"Jody Shelley will have surgery on Thursday, March 24 to repair a broken orbital bone on the left side of his face," general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. "This injury occurred in practice on Monday. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Guy Lanzi. Jody will be able to return in four weeks"

Enforcers generally arent in the lineup during the playoffs so its doubtful Shelley would have played past the end of the regular season.

Still, this is a tough injury for a guy who has been in the lineup most of the season (he has played 58 games), and gave the Flyers a genuine heavyweight appearance on a nightly basis that they have lacked since the days of Donald Brashear and Todd Fedoruk.

Shelleys unofficial fight record was 4-4-4.

Also on Tuesday, the Flyers recalled defenseman Danny Syvret from the Phantoms. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, as expected, will start in goal tonight when the Flyers host the Washington Capitals.E-mail Tim Panaccio at tpanotch@comcast.net
