As expected, the Phillies on Friday placed Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right hamstring. But then they unexpectedly filled his roster spot with Domonic Brown.

Brown's recall comes as a surprise given that general manager Ruben Amaro, when asked about the possibility of the move on Thursday said, "We don't think he's ready."

Brown, who started the season on the disabled list after breaking his hand in spring training, was hitting .341 (14 for 41) with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 11 games for Triple A Lehigh Valley. He recently missed five games because of a sprained thumb.

With the exception of a pinch-hit sac bunt, Victorino has been out since suffering the injury last Saturday against Atlanta. His DL stint is retroactive to May 19.

The Phils also sent reliever Scott Mathieson to Lehigh Valley and called up David Herndon. Mathieson pitched three scoreless innings for the Phils this season. Herndon started the season with the team and appeared in 11 games before being sent down to Lehigh Valley, where in five games he went 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA and one save.

Starter Joe Blanton, scratched at the last minute Thursday because of what he's calling a "cranky" right elbow, has not returned to the disabled listyet. He has made two starts since coming off the DL May 9 but hasn't had his usual velocity.

I probably rushed back too quick the first time, Blanton said Thursday. Every pitcher has to pitch through things at times. I thought I could manage it until it got better, but it kept getting worse. It was my choice to pitch. It was my fault. I didnt want to miss anything. I guess it wasnt the best decision to make.
