Phillies reliever Brad Lidge, whos been throwing in extended spring training in Florida since experiencing right shoulder soreness in March, was on his way back to Philadelphia Monday after experiencing elbow soreness, General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said before Mondays Phillies-Dodgers game at Citizens Bank Park.

Lidge was diagnosed with a posterior rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder in March, and Amaro said Lidges shoulder is now actually fine, but hes now having issues with his elbow.

He had a setback, manager Charlie Manuel said Monday. According to the doctors, thats kind of common, that soreness there that will hold you back.

Amaro said Lidge will be examined by Phillies physician Michael Ciccotti, most likely on Tuesday morning, to determine whether the soreness is serious.

Lidge was expected to begin a rehab stint soon with the Clearwater Threshers in the Class A Florida State League, but thats now on hold.

It will be a while before he throws in a game, Manuel said.

Amaro said the good news is that Lidges shoulder is fine.

The shoulders doing pretty well and getting stronger, but he gets this elbow discomfort pretty much every spring, and thats kind of what hes in right now, spring training mode, and were going to see if its anything more than just normal soreness, Amaro said.

Lidge, 34, has 104 saves in three seasons with the Phillies, including a perfect 48-for-48 during the Phils 2008 World Series run.

With Lidge unavailable this year, Ryan Madson is a perfect 12-for-12 in save situations, with an 0.64 ERA in save situations, and Manuel has said Madson will remain the closer whenever Lidge returns to the team.

Amaro said Monday team officials gave Lidge some time off after he first complained of elbow pain last week, but the issue returned when he threw off the mound earlier Monday.

He was shut down for a couple days just to let it cool off, and then he threw again today and after long toss he was fine, and then he got back on the mound and he felt the discomfort again, Amaro said. So rather than mess with it, just have him come back and see Dr. Ciccotti and see if its anything more than regular soreness.

If its something more serious than just normal soreness, it could be a setback.
Rollins optimistic about knee
Jimmy Rollins knee injury doesn't appear serious.

The Phils shortstop fouled a ball off his knee Saturday against Pittsburgh and missed Sundays game. Monday afternoon, Rollins updated his status via Twitter:

Wassup tweeps. Lil update 4 u. X-rays neg,MRI earlier today. Feeling a lot better & will continue to get treatment on it. Looks good though.

Rollins didn't play in the series opener against the Dodgers. Wilson Valdez started at shortstop and hit eighth.

"Jimmy had an MRI this morning and from all indications he should be OK in the next couple days," general manager Ruben Amaro said. "He was better today. Hes got some soreness and some swelling, too."
