The Sixers plan to extend qualifying offers to both forward Thaddeus Young and center Spencer Hawes, according to general manager Ed Stefanski.

The period in which teams can make such offers began Monday and ends June 30.

By making the qualifying offers, the Sixers will be able to match any deal either player gets from another team. Both just completed their fourth NBA season and are scheduled to become restricted free agents.

The shopping part of this process can not begin until July 1, the date anyone with an expiring contract becomes a free agent, restricted or not. However, the current collective bargaining agreement expires at the same time, and without a new agreement in place, negotiations on new contracts and possible trades will cease.

It could be a long summer for NBA fansas it already has been for NFL fans.
