LOS ANGELESPlacido Polanco has a sports hernia, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Monday night.
An MRI performed in Philadelphia revealed the injury.
Amaro said Polanco would have an anti-inflammatory injection on Tuesday and be re-evaluated on Friday. If the problem does not get better, Polanco could have corrective surgery. Amaro said the surgery, if needed, would only require a recovery period of three to four weeks, so it would not be season-ending.
Frankly, a lot of guys have played through this injury, Amaro said. Its just a matter of the discomfort. If its too great, wed probably have to do a surgical procedure, but it would not necessarily end his season.
I think we can manage this and get him through the season, but well know more Friday.
Raul Ibanez played through a sports hernia in 2009. He had surgery after the season. Amaro said Polancos injury is not as severe.
Polanco said he had been hurting in the region of his left hip for a about a month. He also had discomfort in his groin muscle. He said the injury did not occur in Friday nights melee with the San Francisco Giants.

Polanco has not been placed on the disabled list. Amaro said the Phillies will use Michael Martinez and Wilson Valdez at third base while Polanco is out.
We have guys who can fill in fine, Amaro said.
