Phils-Nationals series finale postponed by rain

Roy Halladay walked into the Phillies clubhouse on Sunday morning wearing an expression as if he was angry at the weather that covered the region like a sprawling green blanket. The Phillies ace was ready to pitch against the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon only Mother Nature had other ideas.

Instead, to get his fix for the day, Halladay could only play catch with Kyle Kendrick as the downpour soaked the field.

Sundays series finale was postponed and will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

With the chance for an extra day off in addition to Mondays open date, players and even manager Charlie Manuel scurried out of the clubhouse in order to head home. Halladay, however, hung out to get in a light workout before finding his way home in the rain.

Meanwhile, in addition to the game postponement, the Phillies also rescheduled the unveiling of the new statue of Harry Kalas until Tuesday before the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Halladay (15-4, 2.51) will also be back on Tuesday ready to pitch again. Lefty Cliff Lee (12-7, 2.83) is slated to pitch on Wednesday with Vance Worley (8-1, 2.85) scheduled to pitch the series finale on Thursday night.

Next weekend the Phillies get another crack at the Nationals when they travel to Washington for three games. Cole Hamels (13-7, 2.62), who battled through his dead-arm start on Friday night, likely will take the ball on Friday night in Washington. Certainly, the extra day off will help Hamels rest his left arm.

Besides, after Monday and an open date on Thursday, Aug. 25, the Phillies have one more scheduled off day for the rest of the season. They might as well rest up now.

At 78-41, the Phillies lead the NL East by 8 games.
