DeSean next in line for a contract extension?

The Eagles have signed quarterback Michael Vick to an extension.

Check it off the to-do list.

So now, theres just one more loose end that needs tying up. Star wide receiver DeSean Jackson is still without the new contract he covets.

Eagles president Joe Banner has said a new Vick deal would make it easier to sign the Pro Bowl wide receiver, who enters the 2011 season in the final year of a four-year deal that pays him the league fourth-year minimum of 600,000.

Now that Vick is inked is there cap room to sign Jackson?

Is it possible to extend another player? Banner said. Is it possible.

Weve always tried to keep that confidential. We understand the interest. But I think its best for players and us to keep whatever conversations were having confidential.

Are there conversations?

Whatever conversations were having or not, Banner clarified.

For me to get into the specifics would be counterproductive. Weve been clear that we think DeSeans a great player and were lucky to have him and we appreciate that hes here now and working as hard as he is.

Vicks new six-year, 100 million dollar deal actually reduced his cap number by 1.6 million for the 2011 season. Is that money going in the Pay DeSean Fund?

I have no idea, thats something that goes on upstairs, so I really dont know, Eagles wideout Jeremy Maclin said on Tuesday. Hopefully, he gets what he wants.

Jackson swiftly left the locker room and declined to talk to media members following practice on Tuesday.

Earlier this off-season, Jackson held out for the first 12 days of training camp, making it clear he wants a new deal.

The two-time Pro Bowl receiver has accumulated over 1,000 yards in each of his last two seasons and averaged a whopping 22.5 yards per catch last season.

The only thing I can control is playing in between the white lines, Jackson said upon his arrival to training camp on Aug. 8. I cant control contracts. I cant control anything else, and realizing that, I just want to let my play talk for itself.

When Jackson reported to camp a day before the deadline for players under contract, he avoided a penalty of a rule that wouldnt have allowed him to be eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

Upon his arrival to camp, he said he obviously wanted a new contract but also said he would play and practice without one. So far, hes lived up to that promise.

But his preseason has gotten off to a slow start. Despite looking in mid-season form with Vick during practice, Jackson has only two catches for eight yards in three preseason games.

In the last three preseasons, he caught 32 passes for 416 yards. The Eagles didnt seem worried about the lack of production from their star wideout after the Browns game last week, but Jackson is a play-maker and this offense is based off of big plays.

Last year, the Eagles scored 11 touchdowns of 40 yards or more. No other team in the league had more than seven.
