Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, who suffered multiple fractures in a bicycle accident on Monday in Avalon, N.J. apparently was knocked unconscious and awoke to people tending to him, according to scout Bill Barber.

Holmgren, 55, who lost his balance riding the bike, was wearing a helmet. No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

He remains in Cooper Medical Center with fractured ribs, a fractured shoulder and minor abrasions.

Flyers players and personnel visited him on Tuesday at the hospital.

Hes in a lot of discomfort but hes upright, said scout Bill Barber. Its more upper body injuries than anything.

He said he wasnt sure what happened except he lost control of the bike. That was the end of it until he woke up and they medical personnel were cutting his clothing from him. Not sure whether that was at the scene or in the ambulance.

The Avalon police report said that Holmgren was conscious and alert at the time of the accident.

Barber said Holmgren was knocked unconscious. Holmgren is not expected to be released from the hospital until later this week.

The accident occurred shortly before noon on Labor Day. Holmgren was eventually transported to Cooper University Hospital.

On Tuesday morning, Holmgren, through a Flyers spokesperson, said he was sore, but in otherwise good spirits.

According to the accident report released by the Avalon police department, Holmgren said he lost his balance on his bike and fell. It was uncertain whether he struck a curb or just the street.

Flyer President Peter Luukko gave the following statement:

It appears that he might have hit a rut or something as he was biking in Avalon. I know Paul, hes pretty fast on that bike so he probably went over pretty hard. The good news is that its certainly nothing life-threatening and well have him back.

He has some broken ribs, broken shoulder and some stitches on his leg and arm, but Pauls tough so hell be right back in the game.

Phillynews.com quoted the police report as saying Holmgren suffered a cut to the right side of head and skin abrasion. He was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Cooper.

Told that he would be listed as "questionable" for training camp next week, Holmgren texted, "I will be available."
