The countdown has begun.

A year from now, the Winter Olympics open in Sochi, Russia. Located in the southeastern corner of Russia, Sochi sits on the eastern side of the Black Sea and has a population of 343,000.

Organizers are referring to these Olympics as "the most compact Winter Games in the history of the Olympic movement." Events will be divided between two hubs, the mountain cluster and the coastal cluster, and a train service will limit the trip between the two to less than 30 minutes.

It's the first time this region has hosted the Olympics since 1980, when Moscow hosted the Summer Games, in which only 80 nations participated because of the U.S.-led boycott.
