One day after leaving the mound with soreness in his right groin muscle, Phillies pitcher A.J. Burnett was "still kind of sore,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Saturday.
Burnett’s turn comes up in the rotation again Wednesday against Atlanta. It is unclear whether he will be able to make that start.
“We’ll know more on Monday or Tuesday,” Amaro said. “If he’s still sore by then, we’ll probably do more testing.”
David Buchanan is the likely candidate to start Wednesday if Burnett needs to go on the disabled list. Long reliever Jeff Manship could also be a candidate.
Buchanan is scheduled to pitch for Triple A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. The Phillies could end up holding him back from that start while they continue to evaluate Burnett.
“We’re figuring some things out,” manager Ryne Sandberg said. “It could affect (Buchanan on Sunday).”
