Before the All-Star break, Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg pined for the Phillies to get healthy and back to full strength.

He's getting closer to getting his wish.

Catcher Carlos Ruiz will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday in Clearwater following a stint on the disabled list for a concussion.

Ruiz has been out since June 26 when he was hit in the head by a pitch in the 11th inning of a 14-inning victory over the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. Ruiz finished the game but felt concussion symptoms prior to the next day's game. Baseline tests showed Ruiz had a concussion.

It was the second diagnosed concussion Ruiz has experienced in his career.

Like Ruiz, pitcher Cliff Lee also is nearing a return from the disabled list. Lee hit around a bit in a rehab game last Monday in Clearwater and is expected to take the mound for the Phillies next Monday at Citizens Bank Park against San Francisco.

Additionally, infielder Reid Brignac was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday for the Gulf Coast League Phillies, but both Tuesday and Wednesday's games were postponed. Brignac has been on the disabled list since June 19 with a sprained left ankle.
