ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Phillies left nine men on base and lost to the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Wednesday night.

The Phillies (53-68) went 3 for 12 with runners in scoring position. They outhit the Angels 11-6 in the loss.

The Phillies were up 2-1 after five innings, but Howie Kendrick delivered the go-ahead two-run single for the Angels (70-49) in the bottom of the sixth and the Phillies trailed the rest of the way.

The Phillies have lost five of their last six. They’ve lost eight straight to the Angels dating back to 2003.

Starting pitching report
A.J. Burnett (6-13) pitched six innings, allowed five hits and four runs, walked four and struck out four. He gave up three of those runs in the sixth and took the loss. He’s 0-5 in his last six starts dating back to July 18.

His four punchouts tied him with Rube Waddell for 46th on the career all-time strikeout list with 2,316.

Jered Weaver (13-7) lasted six innings, gave up eight hits and two runs, walked two and struck out five for the Angels to grab the win.

Bullpen report
A night after a bullpen meltdown, Ken Giles and Jake Diekman each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Phillies.

The Angels’ Joe Smith allowed a run in the eighth to allow the Phillies to pull within one at 4-3, but closer Huston Street retired the side in order in the ninth.

At the plate
Carlos Ruiz went 3 for 4, Jimmy Rollins had two hits and stole two bases, and Ben Revere added two hits as well.

Josh Hamilton reached base three times (single, walk, hit by pitch) and Erick Aybar scored twice to lead the Angels. Brennan Boesch drove in two despite not getting a hit. He had a sacrifice fly in the second and an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth.

In the field
The Phillies played errorless defense for the fifth time in their last seven games.

The Angels didn’t commit an error either.
