BOX SCORE

The San Francisco Giants rallied for four runs in the top of the 14th inning to beat the Phillies, 9-6, on Tuesday night.

Three of the the runs scored on a double by Brandon Crawford off reliever Jeff Manship, who gave up a double, an intentional walk and a conventional walk to load the bases for Crawford with two outs and the score tied, 5-5.

The Phillies led by a run in the top of the ninth, but Jonathan Papelbon blew the save when he allowed a one-out home run to Buster Posey. It was just Papelbon’s third blown save in 26 chances. He had not allowed a home run all season.

The Phils had a golden chance to win in the bottom of the ninth when they put runners on first and third with one out. The threat died when Giants’ lefty Jeremy Affeldt struck out Ryan Howard and got Marlon Byrd to ground out to third base.

The Phils had a slew of chances to win the game, but they were 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position and stranded 15.

The Phillies have lost six of their last seven. One hundred games into the season, they are 43-57 overall and 19-31 at home.

The game lasted five hours, 46 minutes and ended at 12:54 a.m.

Starting pitching report
Roberto Hernandez pitched 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball for the Phillies.

San Francisco right-hander Yusmeiro Petit gave up five runs in five innings. He allowed seven hits, including a home run.

Bullpen work
Antonio Bastardo, in another audition for scouts (see story), pitched out of trouble in the sixth. Ken Giles allowed three hits in the seventh, but got two strikeouts to end the frame and preserve a one-run lead.

Jake Diekman pitched a scoreless eighth.

Papelbon stayed in the game and pitched a 1-2-3 10th inning.

Justin De Fratus pitched two scoreless innings for the Phillies.

The Giants’ bullpen pitched eight scoreless innings before surrendering a run in the bottom of the 14th. George Kontos got the win.

Tim Lincecum came out of the bullpen for the save.

At the plate
Jimmy Rollins smacked a two-run homer and Byrd an RBI double as the Phillies rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead.

Rollins has 13 homers.

Grady Sizemore went 0 for 3 with a strikeout in his eighth straight start since joining the Phillies. It was his first hitless game with the club. Sizemore, who has battled a slew of injuries, could be looking at a day off with the Giants using a lefty on Wednesday.

It will be interesting to see if Howard starts, as well. He sat against a lefty Sunday. Darin Ruf is back with the Phils and played a lot of first base at Triple A in recent days (see story).

The Giants had 18 bits, four by Posey.

Hunter Pence belted a long home run onto Ashburn Alley against Hernandez in the fifth.

Health check
Pitcher Jason Marquis has gone on the disabled list at Triple A Lehigh Valley with an oblique strain. Marquis figured to be important depth if the Phillies traded a starting pitcher. Oblique strains can require a month or more of down time.

In the field
For the second straight night, third baseman Cody Asche and rightfielder Byrd made defensive gems.

Up next
A.J. Burnett (6-9, 4.08) pitches against Giants’ lefty Madison Bumgarner (11-7, 3.38) on Wednesday night.
