The Phillies didn’t offer up much in the way of run support for Cole Hamels on Wednesday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Then again, it probably would not have mattered if they did.
Hamels needed 106 pitches to get through five innings in the Phillies’ 10-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians. As a result, the Phillies’ (19-22) season-high three-game winning streak came to an end.
Starting pitching report
Hamels (1-6) allowed five runs on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The Indians bashed five extra-base hits against Hamels, including a pair of homers. The two walks pushed Hamels ahead of the pack with the most walks in the National League this season with 25.
As far as the run support goes, the Phillies have supplied Hamels with 17 runs in the nine games while he was the pitcher. The team has added on nine runs when Hamels exits, including two on Wednesday.
For the Indians, right-hander Corey Kluber allowed three runs on six hits. Kluber struck out five and did not walk a hitter to improve to 3-2.
Bullpen report
Chad Durbin started the sixth inning and retired the first two hitters he faced before issuing a walk to the pitcher and a single to leadoff man Drew Stubbs. That’s when lefty Jeremy Horst came in and gave up a walk to load the bases and a two-run single to Asdrubal Cabrera.
Phillippe Aumont pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but the Indians added three more in the eighth on a homer from Jason Kipnis off lefty Raul Valdes.
At the plate
Jimmy Rollins drove in three runs with a pair of two-out hits. He got the Phillies on the board with a single in the third to plate John Mayberry and then cleared the bases with a two-run double in the fifth.
Mayberry also added a pair of singles batting in the eight-hole. In three starts batting eighth, Mayberry is 7 for 13.
Carlos Ruiz drove in a run in the ninth with a double for the 300th RBI of his career.
Like in Cleveland two weeks ago, the Indians ripped the ball all over the yard (and out of it) against the Phillies. Kipnis added a pair of doubles to go with the long ball, while Nick Swisher and Mike Aviles also homered. Of the Indians’ 11 hits, seven went for extra bases.
