Vince Velasquez turned in a strong start but the Phillies couldn’t mount enough offense in losing, 2-1, to the Miami Marlins in 10 innings at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night.

Christian Yelich was the hitting star for Miami. He drove in both of his team’s runs with a homer and a tie-breaking single with two outs in the top of the 10th.

Starting pitching report
Velasquez held Miami to three hits and a run over seven innings. He walked four and struck out five. The seven-inning outing was Velasquez’s longest since he went the distance and struck out 16 against San Diego on April 14.

Velasquez has given up just five earned runs in 24 innings over his last four starts for a 1.88 ERA in that span. His season ERA is down to 3.15.

Miami recalled Jose Urena from Triple A earlier in the day and he responded with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his first big-league start of the season.

Bullpen report
David Hernandez took the loss. He gave up a leadoff double in the 10th and a two-out walk. Lefty Daniel Stumpf inherited the two base runners. He fell behind Yelich 3-0 before getting two strikes to run the count full. Yelich then swatted a line drive to left to break a 1-1 tie.

The Marlins’ bullpen gave up just one hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Mike Dunn got the win. A.J. Ramos earned the save.

At the plate
Tommy Joseph continued to swing a hot bat with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning and a single in the eighth. His homer was his 13th in 49 games with the Phillies and second in as many nights. It was a 422-foot bomb that landed three rows up in the second deck above left field. It left the bat at 108 mph.

The Phils had just five hits.

Yelich gave Miami a 1-0 lead when he clubbed an 0-2 curveball from Velasquez over the center field wall in the top of the fourth inning.

In the field
Third baseman Maikel Franco laid out and made a terrific diving catch on Don Kelly’s bunt in the top of the 10th. Franco was shaken up after face-planting in the grass, but stayed in the game.

Health check
The day after taking a line drive off his right shoulder, Aaron Nola reported that he was fine and on target to make his next start.
