MIAMI – The Phillies were beaten, 4-3, by the Miami Marlins on Friday night.
The Marlins scored the winning run with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Giancarlo Stanton drew a leadoff walk against Ken Giles and scored from first on a double to left-center by Marcell Ozuna.
Giles' walk of Stanton was the 99th of the season by Phillies pitchers, the most in the majors.
Ozuna doubled three times in the game.
The Phillies had just five hits, four in one inning. All of the Phils’ runs scored on a three-run homer by Chase Utley.
The Phils have lost four in a row and are 8-16. Miami is 11-12.
Starting pitching report
Jerome Williams gave up three runs over five innings. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out six. Williams took a 3-1 lead to the mound in the fifth, but allowed two runs in the inning on a walk, a bunt single by Dee Gordon, a single up the middle by Martin Prado and a ringing double by Stanton. Williams got the final two outs of the inning with the bases loaded to avoid further damage.
Miami right-hander Tom Koehler gave up just four hits in five innings. All the hits came in the fourth and one of them was a three-run homer by Utley.
At the plate
Utley’s homer was his third of the season, but just his fourth hit in a span of 46 at-bats dating to April 14. Utley entered the game hitting .114, the lowest average among qualifying players in the majors.
The Phillies had four hits in the fourth inning and did not get another one until Cody Asche tripled with two outs in the top of the ninth. He died on third when Carlos Ruiz grounded out.
Bullpen report
Giles struck out Prado with two men on base to end the eighth and preserve the tie. He ended up with the loss in the ninth.
In the field
Asche, Utley and Ryan Howard combined on an inning-ending, 5-4-3 double play behind Jeanmar Gomez to keep the game tied at 3-3 heading to the seventh. Howard made a nice play on a wide throw to complete the double play.
On the bases
Howard was cut down at the plate for the third out in the fourth. He tried to score from third on a pitch that got by catcher J.T. Realmuto. The ball came off the back wall hard and Realmuto flipped to the pitcher to get Howard in a close play.
Milestone
Howard played in his 1,299th career game at first base, a Phillies record. He reaches another important plateau on Saturday (see story).
