SAN DIEGO – The Phillies began a 10-game road trip with a 1-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Monday night.

Jerome Williams and Andrew Cashner hooked up in a taut pitchers’ duel. The game’s only run was unearned.

The Phillies had just two singles in the game and one was a bunt hit.

The Padres had just three hits.

Starting pitching report
Williams allowed three hits and an unearned run over 7 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six.

Cashner was brilliant. The hard-throwing righty went the distance on two hits. He walked one and struck out seven. The shutout was Cashner’s second of the season and he needed just 92 pitches to compete it.

At the plate

The Phillies did not get their second hit of the game until Marlon Byrd led off the eighth with a clean single to center. He was cut down at second as he tried to move up on a fly ball.

Rene Rivera doubled to lead off the second and scored on a two-out error by Phillies third baseman Cody Asche.

In the field
Padres rightfielder Seth Smith gunned down Byrd as he tried to go from first to second on a long fly ball by Brown in the eighth.
