BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO -- The Phillies suffered a 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

The defeat was the Phillies' 82nd, guaranteeing their second straight losing season.

A.J. Burnett let a 3-2 lead get away in the sixth inning en route to his league-leading 17th loss, the most by a Phillie since Mark Leiter lost 17 in 1997.

The Phillies have lost three in a row and seven of 10.

Starting pitching report
Burnett allowed five runs, one of which was unearned, over 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four. He leads the majors with 87 walks.

Burnett took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. He got two outs then extended the inning with a walk and allowed a two-run home run to Alexi Amarista on a 2-2 breaking ball. Burnett gave up two more hits and left the game. One of those hits turned into a run charged to Burnett.

Burnett is 8-17 with a 4.40 ERA.

The start was Burnett's 32nd of the season and that pushed the value of his player option for next season to $12.75 million should Burnett decide to put off retirement and continue pitching. It's all up to him.

Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy (11-13) allowed three runs over six innings. All the runs came on a pair of homers.

Bullpen report
Luis Garcia and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez both pitched a scoreless inning for the Phillies. Gonzalez allowed a hit and a walk and hit 98 mph on the stadium radar gun.

Padres reliever Kevin Quackenbush allowed a two-out RBI single to pinch-hitter Darin Ruf in the ninth as the Phils made it a one-run game. Quackenbush retired Cody Asche to end the game.

At the plate
Three of the Phillies' runs came on home runs, a solo shot by Domonic Brown in the second inning and a two-run blow by Freddy Galvis in the fifth.

Amarista's home run in the sixth gave the Padres the lead. Pinch-hitter Jedd Gyorko followed with an RBI single to make it a two-run game.

The Padres out-hit the Phillies, 10-5. The Phils have just seven hits in the first two games of the series.

In the field
Burnett and Ryan Howard made errors in the first inning. The Padres scored twice in the inning. One of the runs was unearned.

Meaningful homecoming
Tony Gwynn Jr. made an emotional start for the Phillies (see story).
