BOX SCORE

WASHINGTON -- The Phillies beat the Washington Nationals, 10-4, Thursday night, but suffered a significant loss in the process.

Three starts after coming off the disabled list, Cliff Lee had to leave the game with a recurrence of the flexor-pronator strain that cost him two months earlier in the season. His season is likely over (see story).

The victory came several hours after Phillies officials observed a quiet trade deadline (see story).

The Phillies are 48-61, last in the NL East. Washington leads the division at 58-48.

Starting pitching report
Lee allowed just one hit and struck out four before leaving the game after 2 2/3 innings.

Washington starter Gio Gonzalez (6-7) did not have a good night. He was tagged for eight hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. All the runs he gave up came in the fourth inning.

Bullpen report
With Lee’s early exit, the bullpen had to pick up a heavy load.

Antonio Bastardo was credited with the win.

Ken Giles entered the game with runners on the corners, two outs and Jayson Werth at the plate in the seventh. He struck out Werth on a 100 mph fastball to end the inning and preserve a three-run lead.

Giles got four outs in the game, three on strikeouts.

At the plate
The Phillies had 17 hits, one short of a season high.

Grady Sizemore led the Phillies’ five-run fourth with a two-run double. He had three hits and three RBIs and is 20 for 61 (.328) with the Phillies.

Denard Span drove in two runs for the Nationals.

Ben Revere had four hits to raise his average to .307. Jimmy Rollins had three hits. Marlon Byrd had two hits and two RBIs. Chase Utley had a pair of RBIs.

Up next
Roberto Hernandez (5-8, 4.14) opposes Washington’s Doug Fister (10-2, 2.69) Friday night.
