BOX SCORE

The Phillies rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Washington Nationals, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Pinch-hitter Andres Blanco tied the game with a two-out single off Washington closer Jonathan Papelbon and Freddy Galvis won it with a double over leftfielder Jason Werth’s head.

Washington took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th on a solo homer by Bryce Harper. It was his third homer in the series and sixth in his last six games at Citizens Bank Park.

The Nats won the first two games of the series by a combined score of 17-2.

The Phillies are 6-7.

Washington is 9-2.

Starting pitching report
Charlie Morton pitched six innings of four-hit, one-run ball. He walked two and struck out six.

Two of Morton’s walks came in the sixth and it cost him a 1-0 lead. He walked the leadoff man, Stephen Drew, and extended the inning with a two-out walk, setting up Anthony Rendon’s game-tying single.

Washington lefty Gio Gonzalez allowed just four hits and a run over seven innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

In the three-game series, Washington starting pitchers Joe Ross, Max Scherzer and Gonzalez allowed just 12 hits and two runs over 21 1/3 innings. They struck out 20 and walked five.

Bullpen report
Gomez was in his second inning of work when he gave up the homer to Harper. He had pitched a scoreless ninth. He ended up with the win thanks to the heroics of Blanco and Galvis.

The blown save was Papelbon’s first of the season.

At the plate
Carlos Ruiz accounted for the Phillies’ first run with a solo homer in the second inning. He got the green light on a 3-0 pitch and smacked it into the left field seats.

Until Galvis’ game-winning hit, Phillies leadoff batters were 0 for 12 and did not reach base in the series.

Peter Bourjos’ 10th inning double was huge. He scored the tying run on Blanco’s hit.

Rendon’s hit in the sixth tied the game.

In the field
The Nats tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, but left runners on second and third when shortstop Freddy Galvis made a nice play on Harper’s slow roller up the middle to end the top of the sixth. Galvis’ throw nipped Harper by a half step.
