BOX SCORE

Charlie Morton became the latest Phillies starting pitcher to deliver a strong outing and the resurgent bullpen did the job once again in a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night.

Phillies starting pitchers have an ERA of 2.87 in the first eight games.

The bullpen, which allowed 15 earned runs in its first 10 2/3 innings of the season, has pitched scoreless ball over its last 10 2/3 innings.

The Phillies are 3-5.

The Padres are 3-5. They have been shut out four times.

Starting pitching report
Morton rebounded from a poor season debut and delivered 6 2/3 shutout innings in his second Phillies start. The right-hander gave up three hits and four walks. Two of those walks came to the last two hitters he faced before coming out in the seventh with a 1-0 lead. Morton struck out seven.

Morton is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in eight career starts against the Padres.

San Diego lefty Robbie Erlin gave up just one run in six innings. He did not allow a hit for the first 4 2/3 innings and gave up just three overall. But two of them came in the sixth when the Phils scored their first run.

At the plate
The Phillies had just four hits, but two of them came in the sixth inning, a leadoff single by Tyler Goeddel and a two-out triple by Odubel Herrera.

That was the only run the Phillies needed. They pushed across two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when the Padres walked three batters and failed to turn a double play that would have gotten them out of the inning unscatched.

Bullpen report
The Phillies’ bullpen pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Hector Neris got a big out when he fanned pinch-hitter Wil Myers with two outs in the seventh and two men aboard. It preserved a 1-0 lead.

David Hernandez protected the lead with a scoreless eighth. He has registered four straight scoreless outings since giving up a lead on opening day.

Jeanmar Gomez racked up his third save in as many tries.

Lineup stuff
Pete Mackanin moved Freddy Galvis out of the leadoff spot. Galvis entered the game without a walk in 91 plate appearances between spring training and the regular season. Mackanin wants Galvis to shorten his stroke (see story).

Health check
Darin Ruf was not in the lineup as he normally would have been with an opposing lefty on the mound. Ruf reported to the ballpark with a sore left shoulder and was evaluated by the medical staff. He hurt the shoulder diving for a ball at first base in Monday’s game.

After Tuesday night's game, Mackanin said Ruf had been diagnosed with a bruised rotator cuff. Mackanin said Ruf was day to day and added it was possible Ruf could be used as a pinch-hitter Wednesday night.

Up next
Jerad Eickhoff (0-1, 3.60) opposes San Diego right-hander Colin Rea (0-0, 12.46) on Wednesday night.
