BOX SCORE

Adam Morgan delivered a quality start and some offense as the Phillies took another series from the San Diego Padres with a 4-3 win Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park

After winning the first two games of this three-game set, the Phillies are 18-5-2 in 25 series against the Padres. The Phillies own a 55-23 (.705) record vs. San Diego over that stretch, their best winning percentage against any opponent during that period.

With the win, the Phillies improved to 52-78 overall and 23-16 in the second half this season.

The Padres fell to 62-67.

Starting pitching report
Morgan (5-4) allowed two unearned runs over six innings to lower his ERA to 4.03 and pick up the win. He struck out three and walked none as he notched his fourth quality start in his last five outings.

Padres rookie right-hander Colin Rea (2-2) threw five innings of four-run ball in his fourth big-league start and first away from pitcher-friendly Petco Park.

At the plate
Darnell Sweeney, acquired in the Chase Utley trade, smacked a two-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the second inning. It was Sweeney’s first homer at Citizens Bank Park and second since joining the Phillies Aug. 20.

After the Padres answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Phillies countered with two of their own in the bottom half. Domonic Brown walked and scored on a two-out double by Freddy Galvis, who promptly scored when Morgan lined a single up the middle, stretching the Phillies’ lead to 4-2.

Morgan’s two-out RBI single turned out to be the difference.

Bullpen report
Luis Garcia pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and stranded four runners with a pair of inning-ending strikeouts.

With two outs and two runners aboard, Garcia inherited a pair of Jerome Williams’ runners and allowed one to score.

Ken Giles nailed down the save. Since taking over the Phillies’ closing duties, Giles is a perfect 11 for 11 in save opportunities and has allowed just one run in 15 innings.

In the field
With a runner on first and no outs in the top of the sixth inning, Odubel Herrera made a diving catch in the left-center gap to save a run and extra bases.

Two Phillies errors came in the fourth inning. Freddy Galvis made a throwing error, his 16th mishap. Cameron Rupp took the other on a tough catch in which leftfielder Aaron Altherr threw wide attempting to cut off a runner at home plate.

Asher’s turn
Right-hander Alec Asher, one of the five prospects the Phillies acquired in the Cole Hamels trade, will make his major-league debut Sunday (see story).

Roster move
To make room for Asher, the Phillies optioned reliever Nefi Ogando back to Triple A Lehigh Valley.

Biddle to DL
Jesse Biddle, the Phillies’ top draft pick in 2010 pitching at Triple A Lehigh Valley, was placed on the disabled list Saturday with a left shoulder strain (see story).

Up next
The Phillies finish their three-game series with the Padres Sunday afternoon before starting a six-game road trip against the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

Asher (0-0, -.--) will be opposed Sunday by Padres right-hander James Shields (9-6, 3.89 ERA).
