BOX SCORE

Domonic Brown continued his torrid home run spree and Kyle Kendrick and a trio of relievers got the job done to lead the Phillies past the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday night. The Phils have beaten the Sox two straight nights in the home-and-home interleague series that wraps up Thursday night.

All of the Phillies' runs came on solo homers.

The Phillies are back to a game under .500 at 26-27. They have not been .500 since they were 6-6 on April 14.

Starting pitching report
Kendrick (5-3) allowed four hits and two runs over six innings and left with a 3-2 lead. Kendrick walked three and struck out three. He allowed a solo homer in the sixth and an error and a walk put two men on base in a one-run game. He came back and got a fly ball and a double play to end the frame and preserve the lead.

Boston’s John Lackey allowed three solo homers in six innings and left the game down 3-2. He is 3-5.

Bullpen report
Antonio Bastardo had an adventurous seventh inning. He allowed a double and hit a batter, but managed to pitch out of trouble to preserve a one-run lead.

Mike Adams looked good holding the lead in the eighth. He changed speeds well and retired the side in order, two on strikeouts, while throwing 13 pitches.

Jonathan Papelbon allowed a run in the ninth and got the final out with runners on second and third for his second save in as many nights against his former club. He is 11 for 11 in save chances.

Boston’s Koji Uehara got John Mayberry Jr. to pop out with the bases loaded to end the seventh and keep it a one-run game. Andrew Miller got the second out of that frame, striking out Ryan Howard with the bases loaded.

At the plate
Brown hit a pair of solo homers to give him a team-high 13. His second one made it a two-run game in the eighth. Brown has homered in three straight games and has five homers in the last five games. Brown has 10 homers in May. He has not drawn a walk all month.

Howard and Erik Kratz also homered for the Phils. Brown and Kratz went back-to-back in the fourth.

Howard struck out three times for the second straight game. His third one came on three pitches against the lefty Miller with the bases loaded in the seventh. Howard was booed after the strikeout, his 12th in his last five games.

The Phillies stole four bases.

Transaction
Third baseman Michael Young was placed on bereavement leave and infielder Cesar Hernandez was recalled from Triple A. Young will be inactive for at least three games and no more than seven as he tends to a family matter.

Health check
Chase Utley has not had a setback, according to GM Ruben Amaro Jr., but Utley won’t be ready to come off the disabled list next week. Amaro targeted mid-June for the return of Utley and Carlos Ruiz from the disabled list. More injury updates here (see story).

Up next
The Red Sox changed their rotation because Clay Buchholz’ shoulder remains an issue. So instead of facing lefty Jon Lester (6-1, 3.34) on Thursday night, the Phils will face lefty Franklin Morales in his first action of the season. Rookie Jonathan Pettibone (3-0, 3.21) goes for the Phils.
