BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO -- Cole Hamels dominated his hometown team (again) and the Phillies snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

Hamels, a San Diego native, pitched seven innings of one-run ball. He walked one and struck out nine.

Despite the win, the Phillies were officially eliminated from wild-card contention earlier in the night when Pittsburgh beat Boston.

Starting pitching report
Hamels is 9-7 with a 2.47 ERA on the season. He has a 1.86 ERA in 21 starts since June 1. That’s the second-best in the NL over that span to Clayton Kershaw’s mark of 1.26.

Hamels is 9-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 16 career starts against the Padres. He is 5-1 in eight starts at Petco Park.

San Diego lefty Eric Stults gave up six hits and four runs over 4 1/3 innings. Stults tied A.J. Burnett for most losses in the NL with 17.

Bullpen report
Jake Diekman pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Ken Giles allowed a two-out walk and an RBI single in the ninth.

At the plate
Darin Ruf got the start at first base against the lefty Stults and responded with a single, a double and two runs scored. Both of Ruf’s hits led off innings. His single in the fifth set the table for a four-run rally. Freddy Galvis had a two-run single in that rally and Ben Revere a two-run double.

Cameron Maybin drove in the Padres’ first run with a single off Hamels in the fourth inning. Alexi Amarista drove in the Padres' run in the ninth.

Of note
The Phillies have legitimate interest in Cuban slugger Yasmani Tomas (see story).

Up next
The four-game series comes to an end Thursday night with Kyle Kendrick (9-12, 4.72) opposing lefty Robbie Erlin (3-4, 4.89).
