BOX SCORE

Though rookie pitcher Jerad Eickhoff turned in seven solid innings, the Phillies needed a two-run, walk-off blast from Cody Asche to win it with two outs in the ninth inning.

Asche’s second career walk-off came exactly one year to the day after his first one as the Phillies beat the Cubs, 7-5, at Citizens Bank Park Saturday night.

It seemed as if the Phillies had the game in control headed into the eighth after Eickhoff dazzled the Cubs. Trailing by a run, the Phils rallied for five unearned runs in the seventh when Ryan Howard clubbed a pinch double to get the Phillies on the board. They took the lead on a base-loaded walk to pinch hitter Darnell Sweeney gave the Phils the lead.

A bases-clearing double from Cesar Hernandez capped off the big inning.

Starting pitching report
Eickhoff struck out a career-high eight and retired 14 of 15 hitters after giving up a one-out walk in the first. He has tossed seven innings for the second time in his last three outings and has worked at least six innings in four of his five big-league starts.

Starting in a bullpen game for the Cubs, lefty Travis Wood went three-plus innings, allowing three hits without a walk and five strikeouts. Wood threw 54 pitches in his first start since May 14 and turned in his longest outing since going 3 1/3 on June 22.

Bullpen report
Though Eickhoff gave the bullpen seven innings and a cushion, Luis Garcia and Jeanmar Gomez couldn’t hold the lead in the eighth. Garcia was charged with three runs on two hits and a walk and did not record an out, while Gomez gave up a run on a hit in two-thirds of an inning.

Closer Ken Giles came in with two outs in the eighth and struck out three of the five hitters he faced in 1 1/3 innings.

At the plate
Andres Blanco, Howard and Hernandez hit doubles for the Phillies. Hernandez had a pair of hits and Phils’ pinch hitters went 2 for 2 with a double, homer, four runs and two walks.

Asche is 5 for 26 with two homers in his career as a pinch hitter.

Kyle Schwarber got the Cubs on the board in the third with a solo homer off Eickhoff. It was his third homer in two games this series and his 16th in 52 games this season.

Milestone
Howard’s RBI double in the seventh inning was the 643 extra-base hit of his career, which ties him for fourth place in franchise history with Hall-of-Famer, Chuck Klein.

Up next
The Phillies and Cubs finish up the four-game series Sunday afternoon when Aaron Harang (5-15, 5.02) takes on Dan Haren (9-9, 3.73). Harang leads the majors with 15 losses, but owns a 12-8 record and 4.31 ERA in 28 career starts against the Cubs. He last faced them in 2014 as a member of the Braves where he allowed a run on nine hits in five innings for a win.

Haren faced the Phillies three times this season with the Marlins, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. However, Haren is 0-4 with a 6.09 ERA in six career starts at Citizens Bank Park.
