BOX SCORE

MIAMI — Newcomer Jerad Eickhoff pitched six shutout innings in his big-league debut to lead the Phillies to a 7-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Friday night.

Eickhoff, a 25-year-old right-hander picked up last month from Texas in the Cole Hamels trade, became the first Phillies’ pitcher to get the win and drive in a run in his big-league debut since Dave Downs shut out Atlanta on Sept. 2, 1972.

Ryan Howard led the Phillies offense.

The Phillies are 6-5 against Miami this season.

Starting pitching report
Eickhoff scattered five hits, walked just one and struck out five. He showed a fastball that touched the mid-90s and a good breaking ball. He threw 75 pitches, 52 of which were strikes.

Eickhoff had previously made three starts for Triple A Lehigh Valley and allowed just one run in 14 innings in his first two.

Miami right-hander Kendry Flores (1-2) allowed five runs over five innings in his first big-league start. He had previously pitched in relief in the majors.

Bullpen report
Jeanmar Gomez allowed a home run but got through the seventh. Luis Garcia and Hector Neris closed it out.

At the plate
Eickhoff stroked a two-run single in the fourth inning. He became the first Phillies starting pitcher to ever have multiple RBIs in his major-league debut. The only Phillies pitcher to have multiple RBIs in his big-league debut was Tom Sullivan on May 15, 1922, at St. Louis. He did that as a reliever.

Howard, who did not start the previous three games, was back in there against the right-hander. He doubled three times and scored a run. Two of his doubles knocked in runs.

Odubel Herrera singled twice, scored three runs and knocked in another. He has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games at a .359 clip (33 for 92).

In the field
Leftfielder Cody Asche and shortstop Freddy Galvis hooked up on a relay to cut down a potential run at the plate in the fourth inning. Cameron Rupp made the tag.

Transactions
Lefty reliever Cesar Jimenez, who was designated for assignment on Thursday, was quickly picked up on waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers.

On the subject of transactions, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. doesn’t expect to bring up many players when rosters expand in September. The team will likely add some starting pitching.

Up next
Aaron Harang (5-14, 4.79) and lefty Justin Nicolino (2-1, 4.24) are the pitchers Saturday night.
