Instant Replay: Phillies 7, Mets 5

BOX SCORE

Down by five runs after a half-inning, the Phillies rallied to beat the New York Mets, 7-5, on Wednesday night.

Freddy Galvis’ two-run single in the sixth tied the game. Galvis scored the go-ahead run later in the inning on a wild pitch.

The sloppy game took three hours, 59 minutes to complete.

Phillies starter Alec Asher set the tone for a long night by allowing five runs and failing to make it out of the first inning.

The Phillies have won three in a row and are 61-97. They need to win at least two of their final four games to avoid their first 100-loss season since 1961.

The Mets are 89-69. They have already clinched the NL East title.

Starting pitching
Asher faced just seven batters. He gave up two walks, a double, a three-run homer and a two-run homer. A product of the Cole Hamels trade, he made six starts with the big club and had an ERA of 9.00.

Mets right-hander Logan Verrett gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Bullpen report
Seven Phillies relievers combined on 8 1/3 scoreless innings. Justin De Fratus, the first guy out of the gate, pitched three scoreless innings. Ken Roberts earned the win. Ken Giles got the save.

Mets right-hander Hansel Robles was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning for throwing at Cameron Rupp’s head after warnings had been issued. Mets manager Terry Collins was also booted. The benches emptied, but nothing escalated. Having already punched their ticket to the postseason, the Mets can’t afford any problems. Besides, it seems as if they knew Robles was in the wrong. Earlier in the game, two Mets were hit by pitches, but the Mets retaliated and hit Odubel Herrera. Robles apparently did not think that was enough.

Bobby Parnell took the loss. Carlos Torres’ wild pitch allowed Galvis to score the go-ahead run.

At the plate
Darin Ruf continued to swing it well with a two-run double in the third. Cody Asche singled home a run in the fifth. Galvis tied it with a two-run single in the sixth.

Daniel Murphy belted a three-run home run in the first inning for the Mets. Four batters later, Michael Conforto connected for a two-run shot.

Health check
The Mets breathed a huge sigh of relief when X-rays on slugger Yoenis Cespedes’ left hand came back negative. He was hit by a pitch from De Fratus in the third inning. Losing Cespedes would have been a huge blow to the postseason-bound Mets.

Maikel Franco is expected to rejoin the Phillies on Thursday. He has been working out in Florida. He has not played since suffering a broken left wrist on August 11. He could see action this weekend.

Meanwhile, Ryan Howard looks to be done for the season. But then again, maybe he’s not. Either way, Howard will probably be a platoon player again next season (see story).

Change of plans
Thursday’s series finale will start at 12:05 p.m. Game time was moved up from 7 p.m. because of the threat of bad weather.

Up next
Jerad Eickhoff (2-3, 3.07) will make his final start of the season Thursday afternoon against reliever Sean Gilmartin (3-1, 2.58) as the Mets' bullpen will handle all of the pitching duties.
