CLEARWATER, Fla. – Infielder Kevin Frandsen has exercised his right to become a free agent instead of reporting to the Phillies’ Triple A team.
Frandsen was outrighted off the 40-man roster over the weekend. The Phillies had hoped to retain him as depth in the system, but he chose to move on. By doing so, Frandsen forfeited his 2014 salary of $900,000. He will likely sign with another club looking for infield depth.
Frandsen, 31, hit .234 with five homers and 26 RBIs in 252 at-bats last season. He led the majors with 14 pinch-hits. This spring, he hit .206 (7 for 34) with two RBIs, no extra-base hits, no walks and six strikeouts.
