MIAMI -- Manager Mike Redmond has been fired by the Miami Marlins.Mike Redmond has been fired as manager of the Miami Marlins, a team off to a disappointing 16-22 start after an aggressive offseason.

The announcement came Sunday shortly after the Marlins were nearly no-hit by Atlanta's Shelby Miller. Justin Bour singled with two outs in the ninth inning of a 6-0 loss that completed a three-game sweep.

Redmond's replacement will be announced Monday, the Marlins said. Bench coach Rob Leary also was fired.

Following a busy offseason highlighted by the signing of slugger Giancarlo Stanton to a record $325 million contract, the Marlins had high hopes of ending an 11-year playoff drought. But their bullpen has been woeful, and the batting order has struggled aside from major-league RBIs leader Stanton and batting leader Dee Gordon (see full recap).

Athletics: Davis placed on 15-day DL
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Athletics first baseman Ike Davis has placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps.

Oakland made the roster move Sunday and said it was retroactive to May 14. The A's recalled outfielder Craig Gentry from Triple-A Nashville.

Davis is batting .282 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 33 games. He was injured in the fourth inning Monday night against Boston and appeared in one game after that, flying out as a pinch hitter on Wednesday. Davis was batting .200 over his last 14 games after hitting .388 over previous 15.

Gentry was removed after two at-bats from the Sounds' 7-5, 18-inning loss Saturday night. He was on Oakland's opening-day roster and hit .086 with no extra-base hits and two RBIs in 16 games before he was optioned to Nashville May 6. Gentry hit .171 with no extra-base hits and one RBI in nine games with the Sounds.

MLB: Montreal interested in getting team
MONTREAL -- Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre says he plans to meet baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred in New York on May 28 as part of the city's quest for a return of the sport.

In an interview Thursday with the Canadian Press that was released Sunday, Coderre said "we will show Mr. Manfred our love for the sport. I don't want to negotiate openly, but we'll clearly talk about Montreal."

The Expos joined the National League as an expansion team for the 1969 season and remained in the big leagues through 2004 before moving to Washington and becoming the Nationals.

While the Expos failed to draw 1 million spectators to Olympic Stadium in any of their final seven seasons, a total of 96,350 fans attended a pair of March 2014 exhibitions between the New York Mets and Toronto, and 96,545 went to a pair of games between the Blue Jays and Reds last month.

"We need a plan. We need a step-by-step approach," Coderre said. "You don't pull the flower to make it grow faster."

Yankees: Capuano activated from DL
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Yankees activated left-hander Chris Capuano from the disabled list to start Sunday's series finale against the Royals, and optioned reliever Bryan Mitchell to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Capuano had been rehabbing in the minors after straining a quadriceps while covering first base during a spring training game on March 11. He made three injury rehabilitation starts, one for Class A Tampa and two for Scranton-Wilkes/Barres, going 1-1 with a 1.84 ERA.

Capuano is sliding into the rotation spot of Chase Whitley, who left his last start with a sprained elbow ligament. He is due to be examined by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Monday in New York to determine whether he needs Tommy John surgery.
