Ethan Martin struck out nine batters Thursday afternoon, but lasted just four innings in the Phillies' 11-3 loss to the Mets at Citi Field.

Also, Ryne Sandberg's arrival at Wrigley Friday is sure to be a bit more emotional for the Phillies' manager than most trips to the ballpark.

Now, here's a look at some of Thursday's MLB action:

Hunter's HR lifts Tigers past A's
DETROIT -- Max Scherzer was roughed up, and Miguel Cabrera left with an injury. It made for a quiet scene in the ninth inning at a mostly empty Comerica Park.

Then Torii Hunter turned it around with one big swing for the Detroit Tigers.

Hunter hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth, lifting Detroit to a 7-6 win over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday that averted a four-game series sweep.

The celebration continued after the Tigers' biggest comeback victory, with Cabrera vowing he would be in the lineup Friday when the AL Central leaders begin a three-game series with the second-place Cleveland Indians (see full recap).

Medlen, McCan lead Braves to win
ATLANTA -- There's no way Kris Medlen could live up to the expectations he set last season.

The Atlanta Braves have no complaints.

It looks as if he's ready to be a major contributor in the postseason.

Medlen pitched seven scoreless innings, Brian McCann hit a three-run homer and Atlanta completed a sweep of the Cleveland Indians with a 3-1 victory Thursday night (see full recap).

Gonzalez helps Nationals rout Marlins
WASHINGTON -- Gio Gonzalez loves how the Washington Nationals are playing right now, and it's easy to see why.

Gonzalez pitched seven crisp innings and Washington slugged three homers in a 9-0 victory over the sliding Miami Marlins on Thursday night.

"We're getting our groove back," Gonzalez said. "I think that you can see it live, and the chemistry in here is just getting better and better. I think it's the music choice. I don't know what it is, but I think that our guys out there are having more fun up there at the plate" (see full recap).
