No sweep of Brewers, but Phils still sitting pretty

BOX SCOREMILWAUKEEWhen it was over, the game and his personal streak of success, Vance Worley was able to keep it all in perspective. Its easy to do that when you have a 12-game lead in the standings. Its just one game, the rookie righthander said. The Phillies had won 14 straight games with Worley on the mound, but the run ended Sunday in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.Worley suffered his first loss since May 29 and one pitch may have sealed his fate. The pitch that Ryan Braun hit to right field to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh?Technically, yes, that was the pitch that bit Worley. But how about the previous pitch? Worley appeared to have struck out Braun on a 1-2 fastball, but did not get the call from home plate umpire Gerry Davis. Had he gotten the call, the inning would have ended with the score tied, 2-2.On the mound, Worley reacted with frustration to the call.Later, in the postgame clubhouse, the 23-year-old righthander took it in stride.Youre not going to get the call all the time, said Worley. You have to deal with it.Worley was removed from the game after Brauns hit. In the dugout, he told manager Charlie Manuel, I had Braun.Even though the Phillies lost, coming a game short of sweeping a four-game series from the Brewers, there was plenty of look-at-the-bright-side talk in their clubhouse.Worley, who opened the season in the minors, is still 11-2. The Phils are 16-3 in his 19 starts. The teams streak of 14 straight wins with Worley on the mound was the longest for one Phillies pitcher since 1972 when Steve Carlton was on the mound for 15 straight wins. The Phils wrapped up a stretch of seven games against potential playoff foes Atlanta and Milwaukee with a 6-1 record in those games. They have the best record in the majors (94-49) with 19 games to play, need eight more wins to set a club record, and their magic number to win a fifth straight NL East title is down to six.The Phils took three of four from Milwaukee while playing much of their second team. Jimmy Rollins pinch-hit twice, but hasnt started since Aug. 22 because of a groin pull. Chase Utley, recovering from concussion, did not play in the series. Ryan Howard, bothered by a sore left Achilles heel, did not start twice. That just means we compete, Worley said. Were all here to do one thing and thats win.Shane Victorino said that going 6-1 against the Braves and Brewers was a good test, but when October comes this is all gone, it doesnt matter. Its nice to beat them, but it doesnt impact what happens in October. It is all about October for this team. Always has been. Brad Lidge said it in spring trainingWe have to win the World Seriesand that hasnt changed. Ryan Howard basically said that after Fridays over the Brewers. All of this is fine and dandy, he said. But we know what the ultimate goal is. All of this is all for naught if you dont go out and achieve the ultimate goal.Howard and Victorino both homered on Sunday. Howard pushed his NL lead in RBIs to 112 and his 33 homers are one shy of the league lead.Worley allowed three runs over 6 23 innings. He was outpitched by Yovani Gallardo, who struck out 12.Worleys work for the season drew Manuels praise. Hes been fantastic, Manuel said. But fantastic probably wont win Worley a spot in the postseason rotation. When the Phillies traded for Roy Oswalt in July 2010, they envisioned him pitching important games down the stretch and in the postseason. The Phillies plan is to use Oswalt as a starter in the postseason with Worley moving to the bullpen. Adding an effective arm to the pen wont hurt the Phils one bit.If Im thrown in the 'pen, Ill go to the 'pen, Worley said. I know I can go in and do it. Im just glad to be here. I dont care what my role is. I just want to contribute.Down the stretch, Manuel would like to use Worley a few times out of the bullpen. But first, he wants to wrap up the division title. We havent finished it off yet, Manuel said. The Phils can cover some ground on their way to the finish line this week in Houston. The best team in the majors meets the worst for three games.E-mail Jim Salisbury at jsalisbury@comcastsportsnet.com
