The Phillies on Friday placed infielder Reid Brignac on the 15-day DL with a left ankle sprain and activated third baseman Cody Asche.

Brignac injured the ankle in gruesome fashion in Thursday's 4-1 win in St. Louis. He slid into first base on a bang-bang play in the fifth inning and nearly collided with Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller. After writhing in pain on the first-base line for about a minute, Brignac was assisted off the field but able to put some pressure on the ankle.

Asche missed almost a month with a left hamstring strain. His last game was a 4-3 Phillies loss in Miami on May 22.

For Asche, the injury came at an inopportune time. He had 10 hits in 24 at-bats in the six games prior to the injury, with two doubles, a homer and six RBIs.

Asche continued to hit well during his rehab assignment, going 8 for 13 with two doubles, three homers, nine RBIs and four walks in five games at Lakewood and Lehigh Valley.

Minor moves
The Phillies released right-handed pitcher Brody Colvin, who had been with the Clearwater Threshers. Colvin, 23, started the year at Reading but was demoted to High A and walked 10 batters with just two strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.

Colvin was once the 56th-ranked prospect, league-wide, by Baseball America. That was prior to the 2011 season, 18 months after the Phillies spent a seventh-round pick on him as a prep arm out of Louisiana.

The Phils also activated Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and sent him to Clearwater for a major-league rehab assignment. Gonzalez, who signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Phillies this past offseason, had been on the 60-day DL with shoulder tendinitis.
