The Phillies on Friday activated Chase Utley 28 games after a strained oblique sent him to the 15-day DL.
Utley takes the spot of Michael Martinez, who was optioned to Triple A.
In two rehab games at Reading, Utley went 0 for 9 but made several impressive defensive plays and said after Thursday’s game he felt 100 percent (see story).
Utley’s return will be meaningful to the Phillies’ lineup. With him out, the Phils went 14-14 but got very little production from their second base replacements, who hit .179 with a .250 on-base percentage and one extra-base hit. One extra-base hit in 28 games.
Utley, meanwhile, has hit .272/.339/.475 this season with seven homers, 25 RBIs, seven doubles and two triples in 44 games.
