Phillies consider free agent Grady Sizemore

ST. LOUIS -- The Phillies tried to sign outfielder Grady Sizemore to a minor-league contract in the offseason and it sounds like they are still interested in taking a look at him.

Sizemore chose the Red Sox this winter because they offered a big-league contract. He was released earlier this week after hitting just .216 with two homers, 15 RBIs and a .612 OPS in 52 games.

Sizemore cleared waivers Friday and CBS Sports reported that the Phillies had made contact with his agent.

“I like Grady, always have,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told CSNPhilly.com.

It’s unclear if the Phillies’ interest in Sizemore will lead to anything. Other teams are likely to have interest, as well.

The Phillies are very thin in outfield depth and would likely be able to find a spot for Sizemore in Triple A if he was looking for a place to get reps and work toward returning to the big leagues.

Sizemore, 31, made three American League all-star teams and won two Gold Gloves in center field for the Cleveland Indians from 2006 to 2008. Chronic knee issues limited his playing time in 2010 and 2011 and he missed all of 2012 and 2013 before returning this season.
