To make room for lefty starter John Lannan on the 25-man roster, the Phillies placed lefty reliever Jeremy Horst on the 15-day DL with an elbow strain.

After missing exactly two months with a knee injury, Lannan is back to start the series opener against his former team, the Washington Nationals.

Horst, meanwhile, will get some much needed time off. He has a 6.23 ERA and an insanely high WHIP of 1.81 – that’s 47 baserunners in 26 innings.

Expectations were high for Horst after last year’s 1.15 ERA in 32 appearances. His command was much better in 2012, when his hits-per-nine rate was less than half (6.0) of what it is now (12.1).

With Horst on the DL, the Phils still have three lefties in the ‘pen in Antonio Bastardo, Jake Diekman and Joe Savery.
