Ender Inciarte is headed back to the Diamondbacks, the Phillies announced late Thursday night.

The 22-year-old outfielder selected by the Phillies in December’s Rule 5 draft made the Phils’ opening day roster, but was designated for assignment on Tuesday when they claimed Ezequiel Carrera off waivers.

Per MLB rules, a Rule 5 pick who doesn’t stay on the drafting team’s active roster for the entire season – barring injury – must be offered back to his original team for $25,000. Not all Rule 5 picks are taken back by their original teams – Shane Victorino wasn’t in 2005 by the Dodgers, nor was he claimed by any team on waivers before being sent to Triple A by the Phils.

A .283 hitter with 111 steals in five minor-league seasons, Inciarte has never advance past High A. He played 27 games this spring with the Phillies – who liked his outfield defense – batting .273 with a double and three stolen bases in five attempts.
