Could Halladay's injury actually help Phillies?

The Delaware Valley is home to a rabid sports fan base. It is also an area that does panic unlike anywhere else in the country. As a native Philadelphian, I feel like that nervous mindset has played a role in the inability of any local team to thrive in the role of favorite since the 1983 76ers stormed through the NBA.

The panic over Roy Halladays injured right latissimus dorsi muscle has actually been more subdued than I thought it would be. But nevertheless, there are still some who view this injury as the end of the Phillies championship window.

Allow me to suggest that Tuesdays injury news was a positive for this years Phillies team. Its certainly not a good thing that Roy Halladay is injured. A healthy Halladay challenges Justin Verlander for the mantle of baseballs best pitcher. But Halladay hasnt looked healthy all season.

So, the Phillies are not losing 2010 Cy Young Roy Halladay. They are losing 2012 Roy Halladay. The same Halladay that has seen his team lose seven of his last eight starts. Paul Abbott looks at that stat and thinks its not very good.

In the short term, the Phillies are better off with a healthy Kyle Kendrick than an injured Halladay. Just ask the Cardinals hitters.

And there is good news on the injury front with Halladay. Hes expected back within two months. If hes fully healed by that point, theres nothing wrong with having a fresh Roy Halladay ready to attack hitters for the seasons final 8-10 weeks (see story).

With five playoff spots now available, the Phillies more than likely will still be in contention for the postseason at the beginning of August. It wont be easy. The Phillies probably wont be favorites come September.

But thats fine. Philadelphia stinks as a favorite anyway.
