Leg bruise could keep Polanco out Thursday

CHICAGO -- Third baseman Placido Polanco, who has been one of the Phillies hottest hitters this month, will likely miss the Phillies game Thursday against the Cubs and perhaps one or two more because of a leg bruise.

I dont think so, manage Charlie Manuel said when asked if he expects to have Polanco Thursday night.

Polanco left the Phillies' 9-2 win over the Cubs Wednesday at Wrigley Field in the seventh inning.

He kept fouling those balls off his leg, Manuel said. Its kind of high up. Hes pretty sore. Hes fouled off about five or six balls of his leg in the last five or six days.

Polanco, who has his average up to .281, said he lost track of how many balls he fouled off in the same spot on his leg in recent days.

I don't know, he said after the game. Too many.

Asked whether he thinks hell be able to play Thursday, he said, Maybe. We'll see. I don't know.

Mike Fontenot, who spent his first five major-league seasons with the Phillies, replaced Polanco at third and got his first base hit as a Phillie.

Ty Wigginton can also play third, as can Hector Luna, who hit his first career grand slam in the ninth inning Wednesday in his first at-bat as a Phillie. Luna played 46 games at third in his first seven major-league seasons.

Polanco is hitting .340 in May after hitting .250 in April.
