Phillies debate whether to put Thome on DL

ATLANTAJim Thome says his sore back is improving. He still does not believe he will require a stint on the disabled list.Manager Charlie Manuel, however, does not sound so sure about that.Thome, who strained his back Saturday night, was unavailable for the third straight game Tuesday night, once again leaving Manuel with a short bench. Before the game, Manuel said he planned to speak with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and athletic trainer Scott Sheridan about Thomes status.I talked to Jimmy today, Manuel said. Well see what happens. Its a day-to-day thing, but, also, the longer he sits thereSometimes I think he needs to go hit. That comment could point to Thomes going on the DL and getting some minor-league rehab time once his back feels better.Thome was able to take about 20 swings using a batting tee Tuesday afternoon. He said his back, which he strained in Saturday nights game, had improved, but was not 100 percent healthy.Thome was asked about the possibility of going on the disabled list then getting some minor-league at-bats once completely healthy.Thats a tough question to answer, he said. This is about our team. I certainly dont want to put Charlie in an uncomfortable position by not being ready, but theres also the sense to get back as quick as we can.Thome, 41, is 2 for 18 with 10 strikeouts on the season.
