DENVERThe Phillies will have an extra second-round draft pick next season after failing to sign this years second-rounder, 18-year-old Iowan Alec Rash.
Rash, picked 95th overall, turned down the Phillies offer of 500,000 and will attend the University of Missouri.
The deadline for signing 2012 draft picks was Friday at 4 p.m. The Phillies signed all of their other top 15 picks.
Assistant general manager Marti Wolever said he wasnt overly disappointed about not getting a deal done with Rash, a 6-5 righthander.
Well get an extra second-rounder next year, he said. We liked Rash, but he didnt pitch well this summer. We made a fair offer. Hes going to school.
