PITTSBURGH -- The Phillies began their 130th season with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Thursday afternoon.

Roy Halladay didnt get any run support, but that wasnt a problem for him as he pitched eight shutout innings before handing off to closer Jonathan Papelbon, who registered his first save with his new club.
Starting pitching report
Halladay allowed base hits to the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning then did not allow a hit the rest of his stint. He walked none, struck out five and hit two batters. Halladay threw 92 pitches.

Pirates lefty Erik Bedard allowed just a run on six hits and a walk over seven innings.

Bullpen report
Papelbon earned his 220th career save.

With his team down by a run, Pirates righthander Chris Resop got two outs with runners on first and second to keep the game close in the eighth.

At the plate
The Phillies had eight hits but just one for extra bases. That was a double by John Mayberry Jr. in the seventh. It put runners on second and third and set up Carlos Ruiz to drive in the games only run with a sacrifice fly.

In the field
Mayberry started in left field and made two nice running catches at the warning track.
Attendance
The crowd of 39,585 was the largest ever at PNC Park.
