Schneider sprains ankle; Rosenberg optioned

Backup catcher Brian Schneider, who started the Phillies 7-3 loss in the nightcap of their double-header against the Rays (see story), left the game in the sixth inning with a sprained ankle.

After the game, Manuel said Schneider will be out a few days.

Schneider said his ankle was sore but he wasnt sure of the severity of the sprain. X-rays came back negative.

After the game, the Phillies optioned reliever B.J. Rosenberg to Triple A, which means the team will be able to recall catcher Erik Kratz to be the backup in the event Schneider is unable to suit up on Monday.

The bad thing about being a catcher is there are only two of us, Schneider said. And Chooch is playing tomorrow and we have to have someone backing him up.

Schneider, who was knocked down in a collision at home plate by the Rays' Sean Rodriguez, wasnt sure if his injury would send him to the disabled list. He said he will wait to see how it feels in the morning and hoped the team wouldnt make a decision about the DL before then.

After the collision, Schneider actually set up behind home plate before motioning to the dugout to take himself out.

I had to take myself out of the game because I would end up doing the team harm, he said. You dont ever want to take yourself out of the game like that.
