Schneider to DL; Phillies recall Kratz to fill in

Backup catcher Brian Schneider has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an ankle sprain.

Erik Kratz has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place with the Phillies.

Schneider was involved in a collision at home plate during the sixth inning of the Phillies' 7-3 loss in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

After the game, he said x-rays were negative but the ankle was sore and he wanted to see how it felt Monday morning. Apparently, it didn't feel good enough to go.

The bad thing about being a catcher is there are only two of us, Schneider said Sunday night. And Chooch is playing tomorrow and we have to have someone backing him up.

And, that "someone" is Kratz. He's played in five games this season and has one hit in four at-bats.

The Phillies start a four-game series against the Pirates at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night.
