As Monday night’s deadline for offering contracts to salary-arbitration players approached, the Phillies announced the signing of utility infielder Kevin Frandsen to a one-year deal worth $900,000.

The Phillies also offered 2014 contracts to their four other arbitration-eligible players -- pitchers Kyle Kendrick and Antonio Bastardo and outfielders Ben Revere and John Mayberry Jr.

These players would have become free agents if they had not been offered contracts by midnight.

Unless contract agreements for 2014 are reached through negotiation, players and teams will exchange salary arbitration figures on Jan. 17. Arbitration hearings will be held during the first two weeks of February, if necessary.

Players offered contracts are viewed as signed for the coming season, though they can still be traded.

Frandsen, 31, spent all of 2013 with the Phillies and hit .234 in 252 at-bats. He made $850,000.
