Postgame Plus: Does Mets' recent success against Phillies matter?

Share

After years of the Phillies beating up on the Mets, it’s the Mets who are now playing the bully role.

Ageless veteran Bartolo Colon tossed eight shutout innings Monday night to hand the Phils a 3-1 loss, their 10th straight to the Mets (see game story). The loss dropped the Phillies' head-to-head mark against the Mets to 1-13 on the year. Dating back to last year, the Phillies have dropped 24 of the last 29 meetings between the two teams.

But does the Mets’ current stranglehold on the Phillies even matter in the long run?

“Right now for the younger guys, it’s a mind thing,” Comcast SportsNet’s Ricky Bottalico said. “When you’re getting beat up by a team like this, that’s an issue. You want that to stop, you want to get some kind of positive taste in your mouth before you leave Citi Field.”

The Phillies send Aaron Harang to the mound in the second game of a three-game set Tuesday night to try to slow the first-place Mets. After the current series, the Phillies and Mets meet for the final time this season when they begin a three-game series on Sept. 29.
