PST: Phillies don't have ‘very good' MLB players

The Phillies (34-46) begin a three-game series with the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in last place of the NL East.

On Monday's edition of Philly Sports Talk, former Phillies pitching coach and Philadelphia native Joe Kerrigan offered his opinion on why the Phillies are struggling.

"I think it comes down to, very simply stated, they don't have a lot of very good major-league players," Kerrigan said.

"You look at the first baseman (Ryan Howard). He can barely move anymore. He's not really a first baseman anymore. He's probably a DH. You look at (Chase) Utley, God bless him, but he's probably a five-, six-game a week player. He needs to be shut down a day or two a week. Same way with (Jimmy) Rollins.

"But go around the horn, or compare them to other teams, and it's just not there."

Kerrigan also wondered if the Phillies' offensive woes are because of bad coaching (see video), and if the front office is holding on to the past for too long (see video).
