Ryne Sandberg took Ryan Howard out of the Phillies' lineup for three straight games in July.
It was an attempt to give the struggling Howard a mental break and chance to work on mechanical adjustments.
In his first two games back, Howard went 3 for 8 with a two-run homer and two runs scored.
Since then, he's been back in a rut.
Howard is 1 for his last 25 (.040) with seven strikeouts and one walk. His season average has slipped to .215, his on-base percentage to .297 and his slugging to .366.
So, what next? Could dropping him in the order be an option?
"At this point in his career, I think Ryan Howard is a six- or seven-hole hitter," CSNPhilly.com's Corey Seidman said on Monday's edition of Philly Sports Talk on Comcast SportsNet.
