Rollins believes 10 days will cure sore hammy

Don’t expect to see Jimmy Rollins play the remainder of this homestand.

The Phillies' shortstop strained his left hamstring legging out a triple in the fourth inning of Monday night’s 6-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 35-year-old Rollins knows his body -- he’s had calf and groin injuries in the past -- and said he’ll likely be out 10 days.

“It isn’t that severe,” Rollins said. “But there’s never a couple of days with hamstrings. No matter if it’s a Grade 1 strain of whatever, you’re looking at 10 days. So, just going off that, hopefully I can be back somewhere around Oakland.”

The Phils begin a three-game series at Oakland on Sept. 19, a week from Friday.

Rollins grew up near Oakland, in Alameda, Calif., and was a huge A’s fan. His family still lives in the area and he’s always gotten a thrill from playing at home.

“That’s just a target if I’m healthy,” warned Rollins.

A better timetable on Rollins’ return will be known after he has an ultrasound on Tuesday, but he is confident he will play again before the season ends Sept. 28.

With rosters expanded for September, there is no need to place Rollins on the disabled list. Freddy Galvis, Andres Blanco and Cesar Hernandez can handle the shortstop position while Rollins is out.

Rollins’ $11 million option for 2015 has already vested. Interestingly, there is a stipulation that could void the contract if Rollins ends the season on the disabled list and a mutually agreed upon doctor deems him unavailable for opening day 2015. It is highly doubtful this stipulation would come into play as even a serious hamstring strain would not impact Rollins’ status for the start of next season.

Rollins has had a solid season, hitting .243 with 17 homers, 55 RBIs, 28 stolen bases and a career-high 64 walks. His .717 OPS ranks eighth among major-league shortstops.

Rollins was reluctant to reflect on his season because he said it was not over.

Manager Ryne Sandberg has been pleased with Rollins’ play.

“I think Jimmy has shown improvement in the field,” Sandberg said. “I think he’s played outstanding defense. His arm has improved over last year, his arm strength. He’s been very durable. He’s made the routine plays. He’s been a good baserunner. I’d say overall he’s really done a good job on the offensive side of things being a spark at the top.”
