The Phillies' series finale with the Giants should be a special night as Brad Lidge will throw out the first pitch after signing a one-day contract to officially retire as a Phillie on Thursday.
Weather permitting, the Phillies (50-57) have a chance to win the series against the lowly Giants (47-59), who hammered the Phillies, 9-2, on Wednesday.
After going 0 for 4 in his major league debut at third base Wednesday night, Cody Asche remains in the lineup and will bat fifth behind Darin Ruf, who will play left field, while Michael Young starts at first base.
With Matt Cain (6-6, 4.79) getting the start for the Giants, manager Charlie Manuel is starting Laynce Nix in right field to add an additional left-handed bat to the lineup. Nix has eight hits in 23 at-bats against Cain in his career. He'll bat seventh.
Chase Utley has hit Cain very well in his career, with four home runs and eight RBIs in 26 at-bats.
Cole Hamels (4-13, 4.09) gets the start for the Phils, seeking to win his fifth game of the season. Following back-to-back losses, Hamels faces a Giants team he has had success against in the past.
The Giants have 12 players who have faced Hamels -- including three pitchers -- and they have hit .267 with 40 strikeouts. Hamels is 5-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 11 career starts against San Francisco.
